Shield Validation & Maintenance

Like all high quality equipment, shielding enclosures require regular maintenance and testing to ensure their continued performance.

After construction, testing the newly built shielded enclosure is the most critical part of the build. Global EMC’s experienced test engineers offer RF, Magnetic field and acoustic testing across a broad range of frequencies to put your mind at ease, ensure the shield is operational and identify any areas of concern.

RF Testing

RF testing examines whether the electric field or plane wave can penetrate the shielded enclosure. Often even the smallest hole can compromise the shielding effectiveness and prevent the shield from performing optimally.

With decades of experience performing shielding effectiveness test, finding, and repairing leaks, Global EMC are happy to provide RF testing from 400 MHz to 40 GHz. We offer testing following EN 50147-1, MIL-STD-285, and other standards, but if you have different requirements, please do contact us and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Magnetic Field Testing

Found at lower frequencies, magnetic fields are often more difficult to shield against than their RF counterparts. With larger wavelengths, the areas of ingress are more limited, however, some of the most common causes for shield failure are dust and dirt preventing a complete shield contact.

Global EMC are happy to provide RF testing from 9 kHz to 30 MHz. We offer testing following EN 50147-1, MIL-STD-285, and other standards, but if you have different requirements, please do contact us and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Acoustic Testing

Being formed of pressure waves, acoustic sound can pose different problems to shielded enclosures than EM waves. Precision microscopes, research and other applications can all be affected if the noise level is too high. A better understanding of the acoustics of a room, and more importantly the acoustic absorption can be provided with an acoustic attenuation test.

Providing an insight into the level of attenuation of acoustic waves as they travel enter or exit the shielded enclosure, Global EMC’s acoustic testing service will inform you how well your enclosure is absorbing sound. Using an omnidirectional dodecahedron, we can test all audio frequencies and provide a detailed report of how well they are absorbed.

All of our tests come complete with a comprehensive test report and each shielding effectiveness test is organised with you, to minimise disruption, particularly if the enclosure is already in use.

We also highly recommend annual maintenance and retesting to preserve the performance levels of the chamber. Our annual maintenance and retest visits include detailed inspections of the chamber, cleaning of the door fingers and knife edge, shield effectiveness test and leak identification. If leaks are found, our engineers will endeavour to repair them on site if possible, however if this is not the case, they will advise our commercial team as to what the rectification work entails who can then provide a quote for this.
